Residents of Mugumo village in Ol Kalou on Tuesday staged an unusual fundraiser, each contributing Sh10 towards the purchase of a new suit for Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) parliamentary candidate Sammy Ngotho.

The initiative, led by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, drew scores of residents who queued to make their contributions using a collection bucket branded with the candidate's image.

According to local leaders, the suit is intended for Ngotho to wear during his swearing-in ceremony if he wins the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Images and videos shared online showed villagers patiently waiting to donate. Some contributors who offered more than Sh10 requested their change before dropping the required amount into the bucket, while those without cash were encouraged to send their contributions via mobile money.

Speaking during the event, Methu said the exercise was aimed at demonstrating community support for Ngotho while responding to criticism directed at him.

He said residents had agreed during a previous meeting to contribute Sh10 each towards the purchase of a new suit.

"Another day, when someone is called homeless, they will know that they have their own people. Last Tuesday, Mugumo villagers agreed to contribute Sh10 each when they come today to buy a brand-new suit for the swearing in of the incoming MP Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru," Methu said.

The fundraiser comes as political campaigns intensify ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16, 2026.

Ngotho, a former MCA, secured the DCP ticket after winning the party primaries with 12,957 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Paul Waiganjo, who garnered 4,978 votes.

The DCP nomination race attracted nine aspirants, including Wakili Kiragu Wathuta and Isaac Ndirangu, highlighting the growing significance of the contest in Nyandarua County.

Ngotho also vied for the seat in the 2022 General Election on a United Democratic Alliance ticket but finished second to the late David Njuguna Kiaraho.

In the by-election, he is expected to face UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah and other aspirants who will be cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Muchina clinched the UDA nomination after narrowly defeating nine rivals in the party primaries. He secured 3,221 votes, edging out George Wambugu Kanuri, who received 3,077 votes. National Elections Board member Jimmy Kahindi later presented him with the nomination certificate at Mumbi Primary School.
