Dramatic video footage has shown the moment DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua was whisked away through a thicket by his security team after chaos erupted during a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County.
In the clip, Gachagua, dressed in a checked shirt, grey trousers, and a black blazer, is seen jumping over a fence as a group of men believed to be his security detail guides him to safety.
Clergymen wearing identifiable vestments follow closely behind.
The footage came just minutes after another video in which DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala claimed that Gachagua’s whereabouts were unknown.
The incident took place at Witima ACK Church, where worshippers were attending Sunday service when chaos broke out.
Videos and photographs from the scene show congregants running for cover as tear gas canisters exploded inside the church compound.
In one clip, children are seen crying and screaming as adults rush to evacuate them.
Another shows terrified worshippers crouching and covering themselves as gunshots rang out from outside the church.
Masked men were also seen moving along a nearby road, reportedly firing tear gas and shots into the air, though their identity remains unclear.
Following the incident, Gachagua posted on social media, condemning what he described as a deliberate attack.
“We are marooned in church being attacked with live bullets and tear gas, and my vehicles have been torched. We ask Kenyans to pray for us to come out alive,” he wrote.
The church chaos has sparked widespread reactions online, with supporters expressing shock at the unfolding events.
Police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the disturbances, leaving questions about the motive and the security breach unanswered.
