Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s longtime personal bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, has been appointed as Mombasa County’s adviser on Security Affairs, marking a new chapter in his public service career months after Odinga’s death.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir shared the news on social media, citing his extensive experience in protective services and his deep understanding of security operations gained over decades of service at both local and international levels.
The appointment follows the creation of new advisory roles by the Mombasa County Public Service Board in line with existing legal frameworks.
Governor Nassir said Ogeta’s background made him well-suited to advise the county on security matters, noting his close professional engagement with the late Raila Odinga.
"I have today made appointments in the Executive Office of the Governor following the establishment of positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in line with the provisions of the law. Mr. Maurice Ogeta has been appointed to serve as Advisor, Security Affairs in the County Government of Mombasa, the governor said.
"This appointment is informed by his many years of experience and deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional and global levels, including his service to our late Founding Party Leader, H. E. Raila Odinga, C.G.H," he added,
Ogeta served as Odinga’s personal bodyguard for 18 years, a role that placed him at the centre of some of Kenya’s most defining political moments.
Known for his calm demeanour and disciplined approach, he remained at Odinga’s side during intense political campaigns, nationwide protests and periods of heightened tension. Despite Odinga’s high public profile, Ogeta maintained a low-key presence, earning respect within security circles for his professionalism and restraint.
Even after Odinga’s death, Ogeta demonstrated continued loyalty by accompanying the cortege during the final journey to the late leader’s burial site at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.
In a tribute released at the time, Ogeta described Odinga as both a leader and a father figure, citing a bond built on trust, guidance and mentorship.
Born and raised in Kondele, Kisumu County, Ogeta has largely kept his private life away from public attention. His career, however, has not been without risk.
During nationwide protests in July 2023, he was abducted by individuals believed to be plainclothes police officers and detained for more than three days before being released without charge.
His appointment comes shortly after former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria revealed plans to support Ogeta in establishing a VIP protection and security training firm, arguing that his expertise could benefit a wider pool of security professionals.
Ogeta’s transition into a public advisory role marks a shift from years spent behind the scenes to a position of influence within county governance.
In the same announcement, Governor Nassir also appointed Ken Ambani as Adviser on Creative Arts, saying the move is aimed at strengthening Mombasa’s creative industry and expanding opportunities for young artists across the county.
