Kenyan music has no shortage of songs about love, but emerging artist Aivy Fe wants to explore what happens when the romance stops looking like a fairytale.
She makes her debut with Love Fein, an EP that takes listeners through the highs and lows of romantic relationships, from the excitement of falling for someone to heartbreak, longing and the temptation to return to a relationship even when you know it may not be good for you.
For Aivy Fe, the project is deeply personal. She sees music as a space where she can be vulnerable and tell stories shaped by real emotions and experiences.
Self-discovery, relationships, heartbreak and the contradictions that come with being human all find a place in her music.
She describes her journey into music as a form of “rejection therapy”, a reference to the setbacks she has encountered while continuing to pursue her ambitions.
Rather than allowing those experiences to define her, she has made resilience part of her artistic identity.
Even her stage name carries personal meaning. “Aivy” was inspired by her middle name, Ivy, which she associates with growth and the desire to keep reaching new heights. “Fe”, derived from Faith in Spanish, represents the strength and faith she carries within herself.
That sense of personal storytelling runs through Love Fein, which Aivy Fe describes as something of a musical journal. Instead of treating each song as an isolated story, the EP follows the emotional cycle of love addiction, moving from the euphoria of falling for someone to memories, heartbreak and the urge to try again.
The project's current focus track, Friends, captures one of those complicated moments.
The song centres on the frustration of being emotionally invested in someone who cannot give you everything you want. There is an awareness that the relationship could leave you wanting more, yet the attraction remains, particularly when that person returns.
It is a familiar contradiction: knowing something may hurt you while still craving the feeling it gives you.
That tension is also reflected in the EP's sound. Rhythmic production, expressive vocals and catchy melodies sit alongside emotionally vulnerable subject matter, giving the songs an accessible quality without losing their personal edge.
The other tracks add different chapters to the story. Cautious examines the difficulty of falling for someone who is hesitant to commit because of previous heartbreak. Memories looks at a relationship that has ended but remains vivid, while Again & Again explores the cycle at the heart of the project: falling in love, getting hurt and finding yourself drawn back into the experience.
Together, the songs present Love Fein as one continuous emotional journey.
For Aivy Fe, however, the goal goes beyond making songs that sound good. She wants her music to make people feel something, whether that means smiling, crying, dancing or reflecting on their own experiences.
The debut has already received an early boost, with the EP being playlisted twice by the Audiomack team under its New Releases Africa category.
With Love Fein now available on streaming platforms, Aivy Fe is beginning her musical journey by leaning into vulnerability and the complicated space where love and pain meet.
