A female student gunning for chairperson’s seat, for the first time, has won the hearts of comrades at the ballot box.
Students from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) will go down history as the first lot to elect a beautiful lass to head the giant student organisation body.
Winnie Opiyo Nyandiga beat Pius Angatia to clinch the hotly contested seat.
Angatia however claimed the election had been rigged in favour of Winnie, claims the university denied.
The university through its spokesperson Bob Mboori Muliro, asked Pius Angatia to accept and move on.
“Pius concentrated his campaigns of Bachelor of Education students thinking that they had a swing block as Winnie cut across all the departments in the university and had well, good looks to boot,” said Mboori.
“It is rumoured that some university boys calling themselves ‘team mafisi’ particularly joined hands to vote for the beautiful lass,” he added.
Angatia who garnered 2,359 against Winnie’s 3,307 votes, and who studies Computer studies said: “My voters’ names were missing in the final voter list.
They were however on in the initial list which we verified just before the elections. I petitioned this out to the administration, but they just ignored. They went on to swear in the winner. I think she was their project.”
Winnie on her part said: “The elections were free and fair. I was not endorsed to vie by the administration, but by fellow comrades. I was also not voted because of my looks, but because I appealed to the intellect of students at every corner of the university,” she told The Nairobian.
Winnie becomes the first female president elected in a public university.
