- Club wars came to the fore over the weekend as leading entertainment spots pitched to host Nigerian singer Wizkid
- The Ojuelegba hit maker thrilled his fans to more than an hour of electrifying performance
Wizkid lands at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 10:30pm on Friday and paparazzi get into action. His is the most anticipated concert in town but before the Saturday action, leading uptown lounges have been pitching to have him make guest appearances at their clubs.
The Pulse crew spreads out. There is a group chasing from the airport, another one at the new Memphis Club on Thika superhighway and another at B-Club, the two likely spots the celebrated multiple-award winning singer would be.
At Memphis, the anticipation is high with hundreds of fans waiting. The VIP area is fully sold-out. The hype goes on with an assurance from the event organisers that indeed Wizkid and his team are on the way.
At around 1am, there is a commotion at the reception of the club and bouncers move fast to take charge of the situation, then, there is news: ‘Wizkid is at the parking’. Papz assemble their wares, ready to capture the moment only for the wrong Wiz’ to show up.
It’s a group of young people who are here in support of socialite Huddah Monroe, the apparent MC for the night. Ironically, all this time, Wizkid and his team are at B-Club, partying the night away as they warm the atmosphere ahead of his Saturday show.
Come Saturday, KICC played host to the BBQ Live fourth edition, which featured the singer also labelled Starboy. BBQ live is a fun and interactive event that brings together young upcoming professionals in a relaxed Kenyan themed atmosphere with locally inspired menus.
Kenyan acts including Willy Paul, Redsan, H_art the Band, Fena Gitu and Nameless also performed at the Saturday night event.
The set up on the ground was very well done and featured a number of sponsoring companies including Uber, Boomplay, Ciroc, Redbull, Homeboyz Radio, Wanderjoy, Partypeople and EABL. A variety of caterers were also present to feed the masses, who not even the rain would prevent from attending the event.
Celebrated showbiz hosts Martin Kimathi and Tracy Wanjiru kept the masses that thronged the KICC grounds swaying as they were the MCs at the event. They were were later on joined by Shaffie Weru and Chipukeezy on stage. DJs Joe Mfalme and Fully Focus kept the fans entertained as they grooved to various beats thanks to their awesome mixes.
Willy Paul’s performance charged up the crowd despite the heavy rains with songs like Digiri, Yes I Do, and Take It Slow while H_art the band did their usual thing by putting the crowd in a relaxed mood with their smooth songs.
The phenomenal woman, Fena Gitu performed her songs including Doing Her Thing Tho and Kama Kawaida, the latter in which she features Mayonde, Kagwe Mungai and Muthoni the Drummer Queen, which the hundreds of attendants sang along to.
Nameless was not left behind either as he performed hit after hit, including his newest song, Inspire. Ragga dancehall artiste Redsan came in later performing hits like Shoulder Back.
The most awaited performer of the night took to the stage at around 2am, kicking off his performance with Ojuelegba. He later on performed Come Closer, in which he features award winning artiste Drake. Unlike other international artistes who perform two or three songs while on tour to Kenya, this particular artiste treated his fans to more than an hour’s performance.
The party continued at the Kiza lounge where he later headed to, leaving Dohty Family’s Kriss Darling hyping up the crowd after he was done.
