The entertainment industry has been dealt a major blow by the coronavirus pandemic as all public gatherings were suspended in-line with self-distancing measures. With nightclubs closed and events cancelled, Kenyan musicians have felt the pinch as income streams dry up.
Gengetone musicians Ochunglo family and KRG The Don are among entertainers affected by the pandemic as they have had to cancel shows.
‘‘I know a couple of my friends who have canceled tours like Arrow Bwoy who was supposed to be going to Europe. My plans for touring the U.S. and locally have been also been cancelled. We had aboard sponsors willing to fund a few projects but they cannot currently do that,” said KRG.

According to KRG, fans have shifted focus to COVID-19 related news and forgotten about entertainment. Limited access to the internet as more people work from home is foreseen to affect royalties from streaming platforms.
‘‘Artistes are crying they do not have a platform and royalties have decreased,” said KRG.
The Mathogothanio hit maker appealed to his fans to support the Kenyan music industry as artistes now opt to steam concerts.
