First 30,000 mourners at Moi’s funeral to receive free soda, bread

The first 30,000 mourners at the funeral service of former President Daniel arap Moi set for January 11 in Kabarak, Nakuru County will receive free snacks from the government.

Speaking to the press on the burial arrangements of Kenya’s second president, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya said that the mourners will get bread, soda, water, a copy of the day’s programme and shown a place to sit upon arrival at the venue.

“We are expecting to host over 30,000 people in the tent,” said the regional commander, adding that the organisers have acquired 30,000 seats for the send-off.

“The burial plans are complete.  Even if 60,000 mourners show up they will be accommodated as there is enough space,” he said, divulging that the government will provide free transport to the venue through school buses.

Natembeya urged road users to obey orders from police officers, noting that all traffic management plans are complete.

“We will deploy enough police officers on the Nakuru- Nairobi highway with senior officers manning vital areas.”

He urged road users to exercise patience, issuing a warning to anyone who will be found overlapping.

“If found overlapping your car will be impounded till next week. We'll not let few Kenyans inconvenience other road users.”

The Regional Commissioner also urged travellers who will be using the stretch of road to look for alternatives as there will be heavy traffic.

Natembeya also clarified that there will be no further public viewing of Moi’s body in Nakuru County after the exercise ends at Parliament Buildings on Monday.

He called on Nakuru residents to turn up in large numbers to pay their last respects to Mzee Moi at Kabarak, adding that screens will be mounted at Afraha Stadium where the send-off will be broadcasted.
