A mother of a one-month old baby has been charged with theft of money in a church-owned school in Nairobi.

Milkah Muthoni Irungu (pictured), a bursar, was accused of stealing Sh127,000 from the city’s Donholm Catholic School on September 3, when the money was reported missing and she was the one on duty.

The prosecution said Muthoni at one point left her office and reported that she wanted to visit a nearby clinic. A witness, who is a staffer told police that the accused left with the keys and returned around 8pm and that the theft was discovered later.

Following the theft, is alleged that the accused at some point claimed that Sh257,000 was stolen and out of the amount Sh13,000 belonged to her, Sh87,000 for the school and Sh40,000 belonged to one of the witnesses.

A Catholic sister who heads the school learnt of the theft and reported the matter to police leading to Muthoni’s arrest.

She however denied the charges and was set free on a Sh30,000 bail or bond of Sh15,000.

Her trial was set for February 17.
