The Sh100 wedding couple, who were hosted to a tear-jerking ‘proper’ wedding on Valentine’s Day said to have cost Sh3.5 million are now headed to Dubai for their second honeymoon.

Wilson Wanjohi and Ann Muhonja wedded at Kasarani dressed in a red T-shirt and beige khaki trousers, with the bride clad in a similar top and simple denim skirt. That was on January 22, but Lady Luck winked at Wanjohi who still can’t believe how life has changed.

The man from Kinangop sold fruits from a mkokoteni around Kasarani-Mwiki before his Sh100 wedding touched a chord in Kenyans.

“I’ve been a hawker for three years now. I met Ann at a church conference more than a year ago and proposed to her. But I didn’t have money to hold a costly wedding like other people,” says Wanjohi, adding that due to financial constraints, their wedding in December 2016 flopped after an attempt to raise funds bore no fruits.

Then it hit him. With only Sh100 for two rings and a preacher, his marriage could be made official. That was in January. When their story was aired by a local television station, the generosity of Kenyans was unbridled - Diamond Property Merchants offered them a plot with a greenhouse, all valued at almost Sh1 million in Isinya, Kajiado County, to start off their life.

Wanjohi told The Nairobian that after their second Valentine’s Day wedding, “we are headed to Dubai for three days and thereafter plan our next move, probably a better business venture.”

Their Dubai honeymoon is sponsored by Bonfire Adventures, which is also their second after an earlier one in Diani.

Peter Chege, Wanjohi’s father said, “It was also a surprise to us because we are a humble family. I just wish them all the best in their next step in life.”

Jasper Owach, the lead preacher at Community Worship Centre in Kasarani where the two worship, told The Nairobian that he initially took it as joke and “people even teased me that I’m a Sh100 wedding preacher when word went round that theirs was that simple wedding.”

Pastor Owach clarifies that the second wedding cost more and “I don’t know where people got the Sh3.5 million figure. It costs more than that, yet there was no fundraising. It’s just that different sponsors and organisers came together.”

Plan sto surprise Wilson and Ann were hatched in Eldoret, according to Slique Events Planner director Aaltone Jumba.

“I’ve never held a wedding myself but I was inspired by their humility and general wish by many people to hold glam weddings. That’s how I contacted various sponsors and organisers,” he explained, adding that, “I now feel good that their dream has been fulfilled because their love is genuine.”

The February 14 wedding at Bliss Gardens saw the bridegroom donning a tuxedo, white shirt, black pants and brown shoes, while Ann was in a crisp white wedding gown.  What was more, Wanjohi and Ann were chauffeured in a new Cadillac escorted by six sleek shindes that snaked inside the venue where more than ten super bikes led the motorcade, leaving people along the Northern Bypass gaping.

More surprises awaited the friends and family when the couple were told to remove their cheap rings, which were replaced by a set of pure gold. They were asked to say whatever came from their hearts at the moment instead of the traditional vows.

“This is not a wedding, but a grand reception for them, thus their earlier Sh50 apiece rings have been replaced with pure gold wedding rings,” announced Pastor Owach.
