A pickpocket has been jailed for three years after stealing a mobile phone inside Makadara Law Courts.
Charles Mutuse Kimeu stole a Samsung S6 Edge phone valued at Sh85,000, the property of Anthony Mwangi within court premises on July 25. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
The complainant told police he was following court proceedings when he felt someone touch his pockets.
“I did not pay much attention because I assumed that since the court was full, someone was trying to step out,” said Mwangi.
Meanwhile, a police officer who was present in court saw the suspect reaching for the complainant’s pocket. A few minutes later, the officer saw Kimeu carrying a mobile phone. It was then that the officer informed Mwangi.
Kimeu was arrested and detained in court cells. In court, he pleaded for leniency claiming he has a family to take care of.
The magistrate however said it is grave mistake to steal within court premises.
