A woman has been arraigned in court for attempting suicide by setting herself a blaze in her house.

The woman had allegedly disagreed with her husband over claims he was cheating on her. The court heard that Caroline Mwangi, 27, committed the offence on April 17 in Tassia estate.

The accused was reportedly in their matrimonial house with the husband Peter Kimani and their daughter when an argument ensued. She allegedly confronted her husband for having an affair with another woman in the estate and neglecting them.

An infuriated Mwangi allegedly insulted his wife, who in return reportedly slapped him. The court heard that she left the house with her child and returned the next morning before his husband left for work. It is claimed that while the husband was at work, she locked herself in the house and set it on fire in an attempt to end her life.

Neighbours had to call the husband back from work as they tried to rescue the woman from the burning house. Kimani reported the matter to the police who prevailed on her to open the door.

Fortunately, she escaped unhurt as the fire only burnt a few belongings in the house. She denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000. The case will be heard on July 8.
