A 34-year-old Nigerian pastor has been arraigned in court and charged with assaulting a landlord. The landlord is reported to have thrown the Nigerian out of his rented house for not paying rent.

James Akpojegaya was accused of beating and injuring James Gatuna Njuguna on November 16 last year at Hamza area in Nairobi’s South B.

According to police records, Njuguna who also work as transit driver arrived at his premises in the evening when he was informed that Akpojegaya alias Oga had visited the plot several times, looking for him.

Njuguna is said to have ordered caretaker to let him in. An hour later the accused arrived and was ushered in by the complainant only to attack him.

A word has it that the accused who was once a tenant had defaulted on rent payment. A neighbor who witnessed the drama told police in his statement that they heard Oga shout that he would kill the landlord as he punched him and threw him against a water tank. The landlord dislocated his left arm.

Other tenants who heard the commotion arrived and rescued Njuguna from further beating having sustained injuries. Following a report made at the police station, investigating officers commenced the search for the accused who was on the run after the alleged assault.

Three months later he was arrested and was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts where he denied the charges, saying he had gone to ask the landlord why he was not lenient on him like others.

However, the court ordered him to be released on a personal bond of Sh20, 000 pending hearing on the May 25.
