Organisers of the annual Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon have slightly changed the route for this year’s event set for October 31.

The eighth edition of the marathon route diverts from the traditional Mombasa Road loop to extend into the Nairobi Central Business District.

"In our endeavour to improve the standards of this international marathon, this year’s route will give us an opportunity to showcase the city of Nairobi as well as help us eliminate logistical problems with the growing number of participants.

This route was unveiled two years ago and saw a course record of 2:10:12 set by last year’s winner Moses Kigen," said John Velzian, the Race Director.

This year’s route will see the participants start at Nyayo National Stadium, tackle Uhuru Highway and turn at the University Way round-about into Kenyatta Avenue, Harambee Avenue and Haile Sellassie Avenue, back to Mombasa Road and finish inside the stadium.

The race has been sponsored to a tune of Sh95 million.

"Every edition of the Nairobi Marathon is an experience we look forward to. I would like to thank all Kenyans for their unwavering support. We remain committed to delivering a world-class event for all Kenyans more than ever before. This year as usual, we promise all participants a well organised event that will meet expectations of all," Stanchart Chief Executive Officer Richard Etemesi said.

Etemesi said the bank planned to push up the status of the marathon as it has what it takes to rival other big marathons like London, New York and Boston in the next two years.

AK chairman Isaiah Kiplagat said the high altitude in the country was hindering the presence of elite athletes.

Registration is on at all Standard Chartered Bank branches at a fee of Sh1,000 for individual challenge, Sh500 for family fun run and Sh50, 000 for corporate challenge.
