Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has drawn up a shortlist of the players he wants the club to sign this summer.

According to English football outlet Mirror, the ‘Special One’ has prepared a six-man shortlist comprising midfielders and defenders as the race to catch up with rivals’ Man City’s playing style heats up.

Man United duo Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini look the most likely to be replaced, with new reports on Luke Shaw’s Barcelona link also adding to the speculation.

Mourinho has failed to maintain a consistent midfield this season, rotating players from time to time to accommodate the whole squad.

The recent injury to Spaniard Ander Herrera added to Mourinho’s problems, with the Portuguese forced to deploy teenager Scott McTominay in his midfield for the better part of the season. He now wants a new player capable of keeping up with Michael Carrick’s performances.

Mourinho’s shortlist, which is said to be star-studded expresses his intentions to shake things up next season. Big names feature and it is impossible to tell whether the transfers are possible.

Here are the players Mourinho wants to sign for Man United next season and preferably before the World Cup starts in Russia.

Marco Verratti

With super-agent Mino Raiola now representing Paris St Germain’s Verratti, Mourinho will be looking to convince the Italian to come to the Premier League, having had enough success in France.

Verratti is short, strong and possesses positional discipline, one trait Mourinho will be looking to add to his team.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

The Serbian midfielder has impressed in the Serie A this season with Lazio and his ball retention talents have caught the eye of the Man United manager.

Arturo Vidal

From success with Juventus and Bayern, Arturo Vidal is arguably one of the world’s best at his position. He’s an aggressive player, the kind Mourinho likes and would easily fit into Man United’s midfield.

Vidal could also be lured to join the Red Devils because of the Alexis Sanchez (Chile) influence.

Fred

The Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder has been linked with a move away from Ukraine, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Man United said to be eager to acquire his services.

He was in the club’s squad in the Champions League this season and even contributed to the home win against the Cityzens.

Seri

Jean Seri is Ivorian and plays as a central midfielder for OGC Nice in the Ligue 1.

With Eric Bailly now a prominent figure at Old Trafford, Seri could be tempted to join his country mate in Manchester.

Jorginho

Core of Napoli’s best performances in the Serie A this season, Italian midfielder Jorginho is on the radar of top clubs in Europe.

He’s a box to box midfielder who’s ball retention skills could see him become a Manchester United player soon should he be approached and sign.
