Armed cattle rustlers suspected to be from West Pokot County struck a village in Trans Nzoia and stole several head of cattle on Sunday morning.
The raiders, whose number could not be established, attacked Kahuhio village in Makutano and stole the cattle before driving them into Kapolet Forest.
Trans Nzoia County Commander Lillian Okembo said police officers pursued the rustlers and engaged them in a gun battle that enabled them recover six herds.
Combed forest
"The officers have combed the forest to track the attackers and we are yet to establish the number of animals stolen," said Ms Okembo.

Area MP Wesley Korir and Makutano Ward Rep Joseph Njoroge have asked the national government to increase security in the villages neighbouring the forest and also flush criminals out of the forest.
"Let the Government move fast and smoke these attackers out," said Njoroge.
