Governor tells locals to shun FGM

Governor Godana Doyo has urged pastoral communities in Northern Kenya to shun outdated cultural practices that hinder girl-child education in the region.

The governor said early marriage and female genital mutilation are some of the cultural practices that violate woman and girl-child rights on the northern frontier.

He noted that time has come for such traditions to be abandoned because they negatively affect the social life of the girl-child.

"The practice (FGM) has disadvantaged many girls in the region from pursuing higher education and other social endeavours," he said.
