Nairobi, Kenya: Gor Mahia ended their winless streak against Mathare United with a 1-0 win in Sunday’s Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match at Nyayo National Stadium.

Ugandan Dan Sserunkuma scored from the penalty spot after 56 minutes to hand Gor their first win over United in seven matches. Sserunkuma took the penalty awarded after he had been brought down in the box by defender Edger Ochieng.

In another match, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) jumped back to the top of the league standings after stopping Ulinzi Stars 2-0 at the same venue.

Jacob Keli got the opener for KCB in the 21st minute after a perfect 1-2 move with Benjamin Chaka while Edwin Mwaura scored the second in the 54th minute hitting the roof of the net benefitting from Peter Wainaina’s defence-splitting pass.

The bankers were the most adventurous side in this early kick off match. After 13 minutes, Clifford Alwanga who still remains the league’s top scorer, caught the Ulinzi defence napping with a textbook pass that found Wainaina unmarked but the midfielder failed to shake the back of the net from this effort.

Ulinzi also tested the KCB defence and once again team captain Evans Amuoka was leading from the front. Amuoka found Elvis Nandwa unmarked inside the banker’s defence and he successfully shot at goal but the danger was quickly cleared from the goal line by Kelvin Omondi.

The soldiers kept on pressing and were rewarded in the 20th minute by a corner from which Eric Apul headed wide.

KCB continued with their quest for goals in the second and were duly rewarded when Mwaura slotted home in the 54th minute.

In the second match at Nyayo Stadium, Sofapaka bounced back to winning ways in style clobbering Karuturi Sports 4-2.

It was Karuturi who went up first with a 38th minute goal by Andrew Murunga.

George Owino levelled the scores for Sofapaka in the 54th minute. Two minutes later, Bob Mugalia put Sofapaka up but Ugandan Zzinda Hussein then capitalized on a Sofapaka defence mix up  to score Karuturi’s second goal in the 58th minute.

It was not done for Sofapaka as they kept on pressing in search of the lead taking it to injury time when they were awarded a penalty which John Barasa easily slotted home. Obadiah Tarumbwa netted the fourth goal for Sofapaka.
