A couple that could barely make ends meet finally broke their limits by tying the knot during a colourful church wedding in Nakuru at the weekend.

They danced, hugged, and kissed as tens of locals who had turned up to witness their union cheered them.

The smile on their faces could tell they were happy. But their journey to tie the knot was not a walk in the park, with their wedding being funded by well-wishers.

Magdalene Kayondo, 32, and Steve Kyalo, 40, tied the knot on Sunday at Seventh Day Adventist church in Langa Langa, Nakuru County. They both have short stature.

Kayondo and Kyalo revealed they met in early 2023 through a mutual friend whom they had opened up to about wanting to get married.

Their height aside, the wedding was a surprise for Kyalo as it was planned by the bride.

Kayondo, during an interview after the wedding, revealed that Kyalo never knew of the wedding plan.

She added that they met on Friday for an engagement and Kyalo had planned to go back to Machakos on Saturday only to be told to stay as the wedding was on Sunday.

“This was meant to be a surprise to him,” she said.

Kayondo, a cleaner at the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) office in Nakuru, revealed that her wedding gown was bought with contributions from friends.

“We have struggled to make this day a success. When friends heard I was planning a wedding, they would send me Sh200, some even Sh50, and I used the money to get a wedding gown. From here, we don’t know but trust God will see us through,’ she said.

Kyalo revealed that he survives on menial jobs and would do all he could to meet Kayondo in Nakuru.

“At times I would contact truck drivers and hitch a ride to Nakuru,” he said.

He said he is ready to do all he can to provide for his family.

Asked whether they were planning to go on a honeymoon, Kyalo said they were not even sure where they would stay after the wedding.

George Mutuku, a pastor, said he knew Kayondo while a student in Uganda through her father.

Mutuku said Kayondo would always tell him she wished to get married and he promised to pray for her and even link her to someone if he ever came across.

“Steve was also my friend and he would ask me to pray for him to get a wife. In March 2023 when we met at Makutano junction, he asked me if I was still praying for him to get a wife and I shared with him Maggie’s number which he called,” said Mutuku.

Mutuku said the wedding was to take place last year but he told the couple it was too early.

“Let’s support them financially, and in prayer,” said Mutuku.
