Price of raw milk goes up as dry spell persists in Trans-Nzoia

The price of raw milk has shot up following biting drought in Trans-Nzoia.

One litre of milk now sells at Sh60 from the previous price of Sh40.

The county has experience a dry spell since October last year, with dairy farmers facing difficulties to feed their cows.

A spot check by The Standard established that milk production had reduced due to poor feeding caused by decreased pasture.

John Kosegei, a dairy farmer in Kaplamai, said milk production from his herds had dropped by more than 60 per cent . "We have experienced a severe drought for over five months and grass has disappeared. It has become difficult to feed our animals," he said.

Dairy farmers interviewed said they had adjusted the price due to high cost of feeding the animals.
