Group puts church leaders on notice over extortion

Church leaders who take advantage of their congregations to extort cash and other favours will face prosecution, a Christian organisation has said.

The Kenya National Congress of Pentecostal Churches and Ministries of Kenya (KNCPCM) Chairman, Bishop Stanley Michuki, said yesterday that the organisation would work with the Government to instil discipline in wayward religious leaders.

A legal regulatory body, he said, will be established to tame church leaders who take advantage of their followers.

Michuki said they would audit all religious leaders to establish their doctrinal beliefs and their stand in the church.

He said legal action will be taken against those found guilty of breaking the law.

Gigantic mission

“It is not only a gigantic mission but also a dangerous one too but it’s a price we have to pay to streamline the Pentecostal churches in the country,” he said.

Reports of church leaders defrauding their followers are on the rise countrywide with some demanding cash to offer prayers while promising miracles.

The KNCPCM which was formed in May this year, will help streamline Pentecostal churches, ridding them of false prophets.
