Twenty-four people who were charged in a Mombasa court with various crimes related to violence have been released on bond.

They were charged over the violence, which rocked the town following the killing of Sheikh Aboud Rogo.

The suspects were released on a bond of 50,000 each with a surety of similar amount by Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Elvis  Micheka.

The accused denied participating in illegal assembly and  riots.

They include Japheth Maore, Khamis Mohamed, Katengi Gamba, Victor Makame, Katana Wanje Charo Karisa, Kazungu Kangota, Julius Katana, Abdalla Majid, Mbarak Abdalla, Ismael Ali and  Juma Mwinyi.

The accused have been in custody since last Wednesday.

By the time of going to Press, very few had managed to get sureties.

Most were arrested in Majengo where violence was more pronounced, with speculations that this is because of its proximity to Masjid Musa Mosque where Rogo preached.

The total number of the youths arrested during the violence and who are facing different charges has reached 39.

Inspector Peter Munguti led the prosecution.

Rogo’s killing sparked a wave of rioting that targeted led to the loss of lives and destruction of property.
