WEST POKOT: Residents of Kapenguria in West Pokot County took to the streets to protest the spiralling wave of rape and murder cases in the region.

Displeased by the killing of a middle-aged woman whose body was found dumped by the roadside along a street in Kapenguria on Thursday, the angry locals decried the spate of killings witnessed in the recent past.

The deceased is suspected to have been gang-raped and killed before the perpetrators dumped her body.

Residents accused police officers of laxity and called on the State to step up security to curb the escalating crime rate.

WIDESPREAD CASES

"We are tired of the widespread cases of insecurity here and we wonder if the Government is asleep since such criminal acts occur almost every month," said Samuel Plimo, a resident of Bendera in Kapenguria.

County Commander of Police Charles Wasike said officers were conducting investigations over the recent murder case and called on residents to provide information to help nab the culprits.

Barely two months ago, residents of Chewoyet found the body of a minor suspected to have been defiled and murdered.

The body was buried in a shallow grave in a forested area, sparking fury among locals.
