Kiambu, Kenya : Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has said he will not apologise over his remarks that unmarried women are not fit to hold any political seat despite pressure from different quarters.

“I have nothing to apologise for. I have a right to state my own opinion and that’s what I did, only that the words were taken to drive political agendas,” Kabogo said during a governors’ golf tournament at Limuru Golf Club.

Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a has demanded an apology from the governor, saying the statement was insensitive.

“I am a simple person who never holds grudges. He should accept he said the insensitive words, apologise and we move on,” she said.

Important institution

The governor, who spoke for the first time since his statement sparked a furore, said he holds respect for women but maintained that marriage was an important institution.

“My Cabinet is dominated my women and 50 per cent of them are single. What is said is people should get married even in churches,” he said.

Kabogo had said it was impractical for a single person who has not even been able to take care of a home to lead a nation.

Meanwhile, Maendeleo Ya Wanaume (Mawa) chairman Nderitu Njoka said Kabogo’s remarks were timely and well thought out.

“I support him totally,” said Njoka in a statement.
