Reprieve for Okemo as his extradition case is put off

Former Cabinet Minister Chris Okemo has sought to distance himself from former Kenya Power and Lighting Company boss Samuel Gichuru in extradition proceedings against them.

Through his lawyer Fred Ngatia, Mr Okemo yesterday successfully applied for an adjournment of proceedings arguing the prosecution had not served him with material related to the case.

Ngatia said his client's case is clear and distinct from that of Gichuru, adding that the charges were also different.

"Okemo has never been an employee of KPLC where Gichuru served as the managing director," Ngatia told the court yesterday morning in an effort to separate the two cases.

Yesterday, appellate judges Hellen Okwengu, Martha Koome and Festus Azangalala put on hold the two court cases following the adjournment application by Okemo's lawyer.

Ngatia said the Director of Public Prosecution had filed and served submissions on July 21, 2016, but did not serve him with a list of authorities involved in the matter.
