Nairobi, Kenya: Police in Kasarani are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a third year Kenyatta University student.

Julius Obwanda was on Sunday morning found dead in the institutions swimming pool. A detective who sought anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the Press said they are conducting an in-depth probe to establish the cause of death.

Mr Obwanda, a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) student, is suspected to have drowned in the pool after sneaking in to swim before the pool's official opening time.

Kenyatta University Student Association President Sam Were said Obwanda had allegedly been seen loitering at the sports office an hour before his body was discovered in the pool's deep end by his fellow students.

Kenyatta University Students Affairs Director Edwin Gimode said it was unfortunate that students were still sneaking into the swimming pool before the official time (11am).

He urged students to desist from sneaking into the swimming pool before the stipulated time since there are no pool attendants at the time who can help them in case of any emergency.

"As we mourn the untimely death of one of our own, we are reminding our students to adhere to the pool instructions among which they are prohibited to swim before the stipulated time," Mr Gimode said.

The university has pool attendants who are normally tasked with registering students who want to swim in the pool as well as assisting those who may require any help should an emergency occur.

The body was taken to Kenyatta University Funeral Home for preservation and postmortem to establish the cause of the death.
