The third edition of Misitu Golf Series reaches the climax with Muthaiga Golf Club hosting the final round on Saturday.

Misitu Golf Series is an initiative of the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and is a Kenya Golf Union-sanctioned event.

KFS Chief Corporate Officer, Charles Ngunjiri, said the event was introduced in 2010, to create awareness on the importance of  forest conservation hence the slogan “forestation through the game of golf”.

Ngunjiri said golf is in touch with forests and trees and this is quite evident from the tree dispersion in many golf courses.

“Golf is very much in tough with trees and this makes it the most eco-friendly sport that a sportsperson can engage in,” said Ngunjiri.

Ngunjiri said the KFS have continuously hosted qualifying rounds for the third year running in various clubs across the country, both in urban and semi-urban areas.

In each qualifying round, 10 golfers get to qualify to battle it out for the final trophy at the national finals.

Selection of participating clubs is based on regional representation. Participating golf clubs include Kericho, Nakuru, Vet Lab, Thika, Limuru, Royal Nairobi, Nanyuki, Sigona, Karen, Nyali, Eldoret, Kiambu, Muthaiga and Nyeri.

Ngunjiri said the series have witnessed growth generating more interest among the golfing fraternity through especially improved product offering.

“There has been a remarkable outcome including assisting golfers access critical information on forestry enterprise, access quality seedlings and obtain useful contacts for forestry enterprise management and development,” Ngunjiri told FeverPitch yesterday.

The official added that the series also seeks to fill a void and have golfers to get involved in tree-planting activities both in an out of their clubs.

KFS have conceptualised a campaign that seeks to infuse innovative marketing concepts to position golfers as an unparalleled golfing entity where players get an opportunity to plant trees in and out of all the golf clubs within the country.

The final round of the third series will also celebrate Kenya’s achievement of 5.9 per cent tree cover towards 10 percent tree cover by 2030.
