A family’s wish to give their departed kin a perfect send-off collapsed on Saturday after they found the remains of their loved one missing from the morgue.
Mourners who had travelled to Baringo’s Kabarnet referral hospital with a casket were forced to go back empty handed after they could not find the remains of their kin at the facility.
The late Faith Jebungei, 33, who had succumbed to an illness at the county’s top hospital, was expected to be laid to rest at her Kaptalam home in Seretunin, Baringo Central on Saturday.
Fridah Chepngetich, sister to the deceased, was in shock as the mortuary attendants revealed that the body they had come to collect was missing.
“It is the weirdest thing that I have experienced even after we have struggled to raise funds to give our sister a befitting farewell,” lamented Chepngetich.
The family reported the matter to Kabarnet Police Station. Confirming the incident, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent Stephen Kalia acknowledged a mix up.
“There is leading reports from our mortuary attendants that the body might have been taken to Bomet by another woman who lost her daughter many years ago,” said Dr Kalia.
He pledged an in-depth effort to unearth the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the body of the middle aged woman.
The hospital pledged to cater for transport costs to bring back the body for burial if found.
The deceased passed on at Baringo referral hospital on February 23 after suffering a short illness.
