Senator Mike Sonko

The recent shootout in Kayole estate in Nairobi between police after a volleyball tournament sponsored by Mike Sonko, the Jubilee aspirant for city governor’s seat, left residents worried as the goons disguised themselves as part of the politician’s Sonko Rescue Team.

Sonko, the Nairobi Senator, confirmed to The Nairobian that his team recorded a statement with police following the shooting of at least four gun-wielding suspects during the exchange of fire with cops after tournament.

Sonko told The Nairobian that he disbanded his ‘Sonko Rescue Team’ after the death of his father Gideon Kivanguli in 2015. But Sonko says he revived it during the countrywide doctors’ strike when he set up free medical camps for Nairobi residents.

Sonko figures that the dirty games are part of a campaign to tarnish his name since declaring his interest in the governor’s seat and “I know my opponents have been meeting secretly with a controversial city MCA and a former embattled city administrator to plot my downfall.

We know them, but what’s shocking is that some of the gangs that they have been funding to terrorise city residents are from the dreaded Gaza gang from Kayole whom they only pay Sh2,000. These are some of the confessions we are getting..”

Sonko laments that the ‘dirty politics’ in the run up to the August 8 General Election have seen what he calls his political enemies sponsoring garbage collectors to litter Nairobi streets at night dressed in Sonko Rescue Team uniform before distributing photos of the same online.

According to the Senator, the perpetrators were not keen enough to duplicate the outfit’s details correctly. “A few things like the emblem patch on the back have been done with the wrong colours.

Sonko Rescue Team (SRT) emblem used by the goons has a white background, while our registered and official logo is yellow in colour.

Aside from that, the person recording the clip is so close to the goons that it beats logic. How is that possible? Clearly the one recording was one of them,” he said.

The Senator further claimed that the same goons disguised as his staff have also been used in other criminal activities during political rallies and that the matter too was reported at Nyayo Stadium Police Post under OB number 16/2/6/2017.

“Some hooligans were harassing motorists along Bunyala Road and police acting on a tip off arrested six of them dressed in the SRT attires but on going to confirm their identities, we realised they are not our staff,” he said.
