The first question you’re probably going to get in an interview is, “Tell me about yourself.” A formula I really like to use is called the Present-Past-Future formula. So, first you start with the present—where you are right now. Then, segue into the past—a little bit about the experiences you’ve had and the skills you gained at the previous position. Finally, finish with the future—why you are really excited for this particular opportunity.
Focus
List five strengths you have that are pertinent to this job (experiences, traits, skills, etc.).
Prepare a script
Include information you want to convey and begin by talking about past experiences and proven success.
Next, mention your strengths and abilities.
Practice with your script until you feel confident about what you want to emphasize in your statement. Your script should help you stay on track, but you shouldn’t memorize it—you don’t want to sound stiff and rehearsed. It should sound natural and conversational.
Even if you are not asked this type of question to begin the interview, this preparation will help you focus on what you have to offer.
