I joined the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Commerce course in 2006 and took classes from Lower Kabete Campus.

My favourite unit was Strategic Management — though I worked equally hard in other units.

Mrs Kinoti was my favourite lecturer. There was something about her that made it easy to be her student. Her concepts and lesson delivery were quite on point.

It is interesting that we shared the name ‘Kinoti,’ but we are not related at all.

Education was good and we learned to be self-driven in campus, unlike in high school.

I did lots of writing on part-time basis whenever I was free. That’s how I made my first coin, writing for the People Daily, Nairobi Stock Exchange and the Kenya Institute of Management as a part-time contributor.

My most memorable time in campus was when I was involved in community work, visiting street families, checking on Internally Displaced Persons and the Kabete Rehabilitation Centre, where we even had students as clients.

Dating was not just for fun. I was and still is born again and I never used to go to discos or entertainment joints. But I nonetheless liked dancing. I was in the university dance group dubbed e-club, which stood for entertainment club. I strictly danced to gospel music.

I recall that we invited the likes of Ruffton and Daddy Owen to come for shows in which we danced like we were in paradise.

My advice to the current crop of students is to stay focused, work hard and they will get good grades.
