Miraa farmers appeal for help to avert losses

Miraa farmers in Nyambene region have petitioned the Government to seek a lasting solution to the produce wastage experienced mostly during the rainy season.

They want the Government to introduce preservation methods for the perishable commodity to cut losses.

Many farmers said they are experiencing a bumper harvest owing to the heavy rains currently pounding?Igembe South and Igembe North districts, but added this had caused higher supply than the market demand.

As a result, there was wastage as the crop went stale if not sold on the same day it is harvested.

Led by Mr Franklin Michubu, a miraa trader, the farmers said they are forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices due to oversupply and farmers are now counting losses amounting to millions of shillings due to lack of preservative measures and ready market.

“Originally, a bunch of miraa was selling at Sh10,000 but due to the bumper harvest which has led to oversupply, we are currently selling the same at Sh2,500 in order to cushion ourselves against further losses,” said Michubu.

The farmers also urged the Government to fast track the construction of Isiolo Airport.
