There has been talk that Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi may join CORD ahead of 2017 elections.

While this is not impossible, such a move could complicate things for him and CORD leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula.

To start with, both the ruling coalition Jubilee and the opposition have been going through hard times. Jubilee’s move to dissolve its affiliates and form one party did not go down well with some people who opted to keep their parties intact.

As we speak, cracks have emerged in Jubilee as people jostle for positions in the party secretariat. Confusion is also likely during nominations because many will be seeking the same positions.

On the other hand, CORD principals are fighting over who will be the coalition’s flag bearer. Each one feels he is best suited to be the next president.

Kalonzo says this is his time as he has already sacrificed a lot for others. ‘Weta’ says since Raila has lost three presidential elections, it is time for him to quit and play kingmaker. But Raila has maintained he will be on the ballot. Mudavadi also wants to be on the ballot so he can ‘exact revenge’ by removing Jubilee from power.

The question is; why would Mudavadi think any of the CORD leaders will endorse him when each has clearly stated his position? Mudavadi must be careful or he may end up chasing air. He should remain in his party as chances of a CORD endorsement are extremly slim.
