The CORD coalition and more so its three co-principals should heed Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale’s suggestion of a 40-30-30 coalition pact before the General Election or else history will repeat itself.
Despite the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the three, the CORD house is facing a likely fallout, a scenario that will hit them hard come the next General Election. If they do not act now to get their house back in order, the coalition will most likely lose in the coming elections, again.
It is barely a year to the General Election and cracks are already appearing on the wall of the house. Despite the MoU having been that Kalonzo should be the party’s presidential flag bearer next year, Wetangula insists he wants to go for the big seat while Raila has remained silent over whether he will support any of them or will go in for himself.
This is made even worse by the fact that Raila did not attend Wetangula’s presidential bid launch, despite having later given reasons for it and apologized. Wiper is equally feeling as having been duped by the 2013 memorandum as there are no signs of Raila supporting Kalonzo for the presidential seat as was agreed upon.
Having been in the political arena for quite a while, Raila Odinga should by now know how the game is played. Everyone is in it for their own interests. As such, Khalwale’s 40-30-30 is the best strategy the party can have as it will ensure that each one of them is in terms about what they will get out of it at the end of it all. Unless Raila wants the 2007 scenario where Kalonzo defected to PNU or the 2013 scenario where Mudavadi defected to Amani coalition, getting his house in order now is the only way the party will be able to go against Jubilee.

The country is going through rough economic times and the only hope we have left is a change of government. However, if the political trend continues as is, our hope of a change of government could become just another unfulfilled dream. The dropping of the ICC cases against Deputy President William Ruto is a great boost to the Jubilee Coalition and CORD has to work hard in order to match up. An agreed upon strategy should be decided on how the party will settle on its flag bearer and the process should be fair and all inclusive.
Proper communication strategies have to be put in place or else one of the co-principals will defect the coalition. And if history is anything to go by, the defection of any of the three principals any time from now could only mean one thing to the CORD coalition, defeat, again.
