The Okoa Kenya campaign by the Opposition that was launched on Monday is utterly personal and political. It has nothing to do with addressing the problems confronting ordinary Kenyans.

Truly, the country is in a bad state due to rampant corruption, economic crisis, poverty and unemployment. But, Okoa Kenya push is not an antidote to these problems because the issues proposed are not priority.

First, the proposal to create a Ward Development Kit is meant to lure MCAs to support the campaign since it must be approved by at least 24 county assemblies.

Secondly, the proposed Constituency Development Fund for MPs is a misplaced idea the opposition is using to entice MPs. It is evident to Kenyans that MPs cannot be trusted with public resources. The 11th Parliament is the best example of how selfish and rogue MPs are. They are after enriching themselves through enacting laws favouring them, without taking due consideration of poor taxpayers.

Also the suggestion that governors should have a stake in the country’s security is a scheme to woo them to support the campaign. And increasing county allocation to at least 45 per cent of country’s budget is another enticement.

In addition, the recommendation to give senators powers to vet appointments to constitutional offices such as that of Chief Justice, Director of Public Prosecutions, Auditor General is a plan to lure them.

In short, Okoa Kenya proposals are schemes to amuse MCAs, MPs, senators and governors as opposed to helping poor Kenyans.

Electoral reforms recommendations are also personal because they do not solve any immediate problem facing Kenyans.

Okoa Kenya should have been what it purports to be if the issues ailing the country such as widespread corruption, injustice, poverty, poor economy, cost of life and runaway unemployment were incorporated.

However, since the priority issues appear nowhere, it proves that the Opposition is pursuing their personal and political agenda.
