Concerning the question of animal rights that was posed about chickens being draped round a man’s neck in The Standard edition of Tuesday, the answer sadly is that animals have few rights.
The Kenya Society for Protection and Care of Animals is continuously fighting for animals to be treated fairly, but it is an uphill task.
There is a Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act which needs relevant authorities to enforce but, unfortunately, there is very little interest from them.
There is need for a sense of responsibility and compassion from the public and the authorities to help eradicate such cruelty.
Unfortunately, as the population increases and human problems increase, people are apt to forget that animals, being sentient beings, have the capacity to suffer.

We have dominance over animals but that means we should have a sense of responsibility towards their well-being.
