Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama

Some Opposition MPs have defended the "List of Shame" recently released by Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga.

Senators Johnstone Muthama (Machakos), James Orengo (Siaya) and National Assembly members Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda), David Ochieng (Ugenya) and Gideon Ochanda (Bondo) told their Jubilee counterparts not to wish away Mr Raila's list of those who were allegedly removed from the list President Uhuru Kenyatta tabled in the National Assembly in March.

They said those mentioned in Raila's graft list should be investigated.

They were speaking during a pre-wedding ceremony for Orengo's daughter, Lavender, at the senator's home in Ugenya.

Mr Gumbo, who is the National Assembly's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman, said Raila's list "provides opportunity to audit the institutions alleged to have been involved in graft and should therefore not be dismissed".

"It is not possible to have the audit queries at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Ministry of Devolution without the knowledge of the heads of those institutions," he said. Mr Ochieng wondered why some IEBC officials "were in the President's list yet others were missing".

Mr Ochanda said: "There is much more that we are leaving out in the fight against corruption, which can paralyse our fight against the vice. The investigative agencies should dig deeper to ensure nobody is spared."

Mr Orengo challenged members of the county assemblies (MCAs) to ensure corruption is not devolved to counties by ensuring there is accountability in county governments.
