MOMBASA, KENYA: The Republic of Lithuania has set up its East Africa consulate in Kenya, and appointed prominent lawyer Counsel George Oraro as its first consul for the region.
The consulate will be based in Nairobi, according to reports which indicate that besides seeking to establish a diplomatic foothold in East Africa, the former Soviet Republic's planned first consulate in the region demonstrate's Lithuania's growing interest in regional nations' energy sector.
Lithuania became independent at the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics USSR in 1991 and is a member of the European Union EU, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation NATO and the World Trade Organisation WTO.
As a sign of growing interest in Africa, Lithuania announced plans to put up an embassy in South Africa where it has three consulates; in Pretoria, Cape Town and Johannesburg. This coincided Lithuania's technology company BOD Group initiating the implementation of its Solar panel pilot project.
As shown Lithuania could be eying the Kenyan energy sector among other trade relations.
Senior Counsel Oraro now becomes the first honorary consul for the Lithuanian Consulate in Kenya.
Oraro is a lawyer with over 35 years of experience in the practice.
In 2012 former President Mwai Kibaki honored Oraro for his exemplary service and conferred to him the honour and dignity of senior counsel.
