Governor Josephat Nanok has acknowledged efforts by Uganda President Yoweri Museveni to restore peace in the Karamoja region.

Mr Nanok said this has created stability in the region and has made the Kenya-Uganda border the safest point in the county due to the 1973 Lokiriama Peace Accord.

The governor said Turkana will continue to hold onto the Accord.

“I thank the Ugandan President for making the dream of peace come true in this region. None of us ever thought Karamoja would ever have peace,” he said.

The governor was speaking during his visit to Morulinga State Lodge in Moroto when he met with Uganda’s First Lady Janet Museveni, who is also Minister of Karamoja affairs.

Regional ties

The two discussed ways to further strengthen regional ties. Nanok also thanked Mrs Museveni for allowing Turkana herders to look for pasture in Uganda.

On her part, Mrs Museveni asked communities in the region to embrace each other, ignore issues that separate them and concentrate on “fundamental matters that can strengthen relations socially and economically”.

The first lady also called on warring pastoral communities to stop shedding innocent blood through cattle rustling and boundary conflicts saying human blood does not pour free but attracts punishment from God.

She said Karamoja was in such a state since a lot of blood had been poured and this had attracted the wrath of God which was lingering in the region until she took up the Karamoja Affairs docket.
