Kwale, Kenya: Two madrassa teachers died yesterday morning after the vehicle they were travelling in with their students was involved in an accident at Taru, along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
Mahmoud Abdillahy, who survived the crash, said the two teachers, Ahmed Ali Uthman and Said Ali Uthman, were sitting next to the driver of the 14-seater matatu as the group made its way to Maulid celebrations at Mackinnon Road when the crash occurred.
“We collided with a lorry heading to Mombasa as our driver was trying to overtake the vehicle in front of us,” said Abdillahy. Kinango Deputy County Commissioner Moses Ivuto said the dead teachers hailed from Tana River County.
He added that the two occupants of the truck were not injured during the 5am accident in the Muembeni area of Kwale County. Survivors were treated at Mariakani District Hospital and at the Coast General Hospital.
Seven students were injured and four of them have been admitted to Coast Genera Hospital.
