Kenya National Sevens team coach Paul Treu (pictured) has blamed inexperience for the poor performance at the just concluded Dubai Sevens. Kenya won only one game in six at the second leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series where they lost in the Shield final.

Having gone without a win on the first day, Kenya were relegated to the Bowl quarter final where they succumbed 5-40 to Samoa yesterday.

The Bowl quarter-final loss meant Kenya were relegated to the Shield semi-finals where they beat Brazil 22-7 in what appeared to be a tough fixture against a core team in the series (Kenya) and an underdog in the tournament.

This single victory, propelled Kenya to the Shield final where they continued with their poor form, losing 12-19 to Canada.

Speaking to World Rugby Media during the games, Treu acknowledged that this was a below par performance, but insisted  he had a young squad.

According to the South African, the current crop of players have very little experience in the international arena and hence the struggle.

Treu went on to claim that they will use the experience from Dubai as a learning opportunity and called for patience as the team continues to build with the new players.

He has had to make do without the likes of Collins Injera, Humphrey Kayange, Oscar Ouma, Billy Odiambo, Biko Adema and Horace Otieno, who have moved on or were unavailable for different reasons.

The only remaining players in the set-up include captain Andrew Amonde, who has been criticised for being a solid player who would be better suited for Fifteens Rugby as opposed to being a fluid player of sevens.

The likes of Oscar Ayodi, Leonard Mugaisi and Dennis Muhanji have failed to make their mark and will have to dig deeper if they are to compete at the next leg of the circuit in South Africa next weekend.

Meanwhile the Kenya Cup got back into action after the break last weekend. Nondies RFC registered the first win of the weekend on Friday night by beating Homeboyz 30-8 at the Jamhuri grounds.

The next win was recorded by Mwamba RFC who beat newly promoted Catholic University 77-3 at the Kenyatta University yesterday afternoon, which was also the same ground where the defending champions Nakuru RFC beat the hosts Blak Blad 44-0.

The other game of the day saw Kenya Commercial Bank beat University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine at the Impala grounds.
