Despite all the dark clouds hanging over Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia off the pitch, the team displayed a stellar performance in the league with a 1-0 win over Sony Sugar in Nakuru, yesterday.

Quite a tough and tactical match it was but Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson surprised many people with his starting line-up, which seemed to be a more defensive line-up.

Sony, who stayed behind the ball relied on quick attacks and that exhibited the preferred system of coach Zedekia ‘Zico’ Otieno.

In the second half, Sony side kept their discipline at the defence while soaking in the piling pressure from Gor.

The first blow to Sony was a red card to defender Eugene Ochieng’ for a dangerous tackle on Gor’s Eric Ochieng’.

K’Ogalo utilised the numerical advantage over Zico’s boys to pin them in their own half. Anthony Akumu rattled the woodwork with a fantastic freekick as Sony survived the scare.

Ferocious shot

But this did not last for long as Gor’s danger man Dan Sserunkuma found the back of the net in the 66th minute with a ferocious shot that Sony’s goalkeeper Lucas Indeche couldn’t help despite his efforts to punch away the ball.

Sony side looked lost in the final 20 minutes but Gor maintained the tempo with Musa Mohammed coming close with a long shot that went inches over the cross bar. With the win, Gor remain at the summit with 23 points.

At Nyayo National Stadium, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) edged Mathare United 1-0.

At Machakos Municipal Stadium, Sofapaka and Western Stima were involved in a six-goal thriller after their match ended 3-3.

Close range

At Nyayo Stadium, KRA scored through Joseph Mulume in the 28th minute to extend the tax men’s good run in the league.

United started strongly and failed to score as early as the sixth minute with Harrison Mwendwa failing to tap home from close range.

The tax men should have got the opener at the 25th minute mark but  Geoffrey Kataka missed from close range.

However three minutes later, Mulume beat his marker and calmly slotted home the opener and it was the only goal of the match.

Sofapaka were quick to get goals and went ahead in the second minute after Enock Agwanda had put them ahead from a John Barasa set up.

In the 15th minute, it was the turn of Agwanda to set up Barasa and the latter slotted home easily from a long corner kick.

The visitors pulled one back in the 20th minute through Fredrick Nyarombo and then David Okello ensured his side was back in the match at the 35th minute mark.

After that Stima appeared to dominate and went ahead for the first in the 42nd minute after Shafik  Batambuze headed home Nyarombo’s cross.

The goal shocked Sofapaka into action and after launching their own attack were back in the match before the half time mark, thanks to Clifton Miheso’s strike. In Muhoroni, Muhoroni Youth held Bandari to a barren draw.
