Brightest students prefer telecom engineering to medicine

A total of 16 of the top 20 candidates in last year’s Form Four exam were admitted to study medicine. But overall, the top performers preferred something else — Telecommunication and Information Engineering.

Among the top 20 KCSE candidates last year, only two were selected to study Telecommunication and Information Engineering, three will end up in Civil Engineering classes, and one each for Actuarial Science and Industrial Chemistry.

A total of 127 students were selected to pursue Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with the highest recording a cluster of 47.61 points at UoN while 25 were admitted for Bachelor of Science (Telecommunication and Information Engineering) at 47.11 points in JKUAT.

However, the weighted mean for the Telecommunication and Information Engineering class is higher than that of the admitted medics.

“In recent years there have been phenomenal advances in technology, particularly in telecommunications such as Mobile Communications, Internet TV, Image Processing, Social Networking and Video Conferencing,” the JKUAT website says about Telecommunication and Information Engineering.
