Ngala widow calls for probe into freedom fighter’s death

KILIFI, KENYA: The widow of the late Kenyan freedom fighter Ronald Gideon Kahindi Ngala has called on the Government to investigate the controversial death of her husband 40 years ago.

Speaking in Vishakani village in Kilifi County during the 40th memorial of her husband, 87-year-old Esther said the death of her husband still haunts her family.

According to official Government reports, Ngala, who co-founded the now defunct Kenya African Democratic Union which he merged with KANU in 1965, died on Christmas Day in 1972 of injuries sustained from a road accident that occurred on December 12 along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Family members and supporters of the foremost nationalist from Coast Province believe the official version of events was a cover-up story to mask an assassination attempt by some key functionaries of the Kenyatta regime who considered him an opposition threat.

The late Ngala, who was a minister in the Kenyatta regime and also Kilifi South constituency Member of Parliament was succeeded by his son Noah Katana Ngala.
