Kenyans are furious with Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho after he posted about his visit to Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Marrakech, Morocco.
The post came out today where Joho praised the university’s work in mining and sustainability.
“I had the opportunity to visit Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Marrakech, Morocco, a premier institution renowned for its strong industry connections, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. The university has been instrumental in building human capacity for the mining industry, including organizations like the OCP Group,” he posted.
Accompanied by Kenya’s Ambassador to Morocco, H.E. J.G. Akinya, and Kenya Chamber of Commerce Vice President Mustafa Ramadhan, the visit highlighted innovation and sustainability, themes that have struck a raw nerve back home.
Universities play a crucial role in the economic development of their countries through research and development.

Joho’s post could not have been more ill-timed. Since September 17, 2025, public universities across Kenya have been paralysed by a lecturers’ strike.
The strike has left thousands of students in limbo, with no end in sight as negotiations stall.
Against this backdrop, Joho’s praise for a foreign institution’s success has been met with widespread anger, with many accusing the government of neglecting its own education system.
Social media reactions have been scathing. On X, users branded Joho’s comments as hypocritical, urging him to address the unpaid lecturers.
Others, such as @DavincyKE, expressed disbelief. “Universities in Kenya are shut down, lecturers are unpaid, and students have lost months of study. Visiting foreign institutions and praising progress means nothing if our own education system is collapsing. Pay the lecturers. Restore learning,” he posted.
@davidtheaka posted, “What an irony!...the audacity of visiting a foreign University, taking pictures and praising it while our Universities are closed because you (government) can't pay lecturers.”
“ How shameful. You're globe-trotting in other countries' universities, but back home, all public universities are on strike due to unpaid wages and salaries,” posted X user @_Oriwa
