Politician Robert Alai and comedian Eunice Mammito have found themselves on the receiving end of Kenyans’ fury after questioning Embakasi East MP Babu Owino’s initiative to offer free online tuition for KCSE candidates.

The outspoken Embakasi East legislator announced he would be conducting live revision sessions on his Facebook page to help students prepare for their upcoming national exams.

On his Facebook, Babu wrote, “This Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m., I will be revising Mathematics Papers 1 and 2 with the KCSE candidates 2025. Parents should give their children phones and bundles to watch these life-changing lessons. Stay tuned on my Facebook page @BabuOwino.”

“I urge parents to buy their candidates bundles and also lend them their phones to catch these life-changing lessons,” Babu posted, earning praise from many who lauded his dedication to education.

However, the mood quickly shifted after Mammito commented on his post, asking, “Why not pay teachers to do that?” Her remark appeared to ruffle a section of Kenyans who rushed to defend the MP, arguing that his efforts were noble and beneficial to students across the country.

Robert Alai also faced criticism for questioning the MP’s approach. Many Kenyans commended Babu for his consistency in helping students, especially during exam season, noting that he had been offering free online lessons since the COVID-19 lockdowns.

As the backlash intensified, the top female comedian attempted to clarify her statement, saying that as a second-term MP, Babu should have focused on enacting legislation to improve the education sector. Yet, her follow-up post only fanned the flames further.

Several netizens accused her of misunderstanding Babu’s intentions and unfairly criticising someone using his platform to make a positive impact.

“Babu is doing what many leaders should be doing — empowering learners, not just talking,” one X user commented.

Another added, “She’s attacking the wrong person. Babu is teaching students directly — his BODMAS skills are helping real candidates, not harming anyone.”
