Africa women club championships silver medalists Strathmore University team, Scorpions, yesterday trounced Mount Kenya University (MKU) 8-0 in their national women’s league at City Park stadium.

Head coach Meshack Senge told FeverPitch said: “The girls played well, we played according to plan, our conversions were not good but we are going to polish that,” he said.

The Scorpions currently placed fourth on the table have to win their remaining matches to secure a spot for the club championships.

Senge admitted it is not going to be easy and their toughest match will be against current league leaders Orange Telkom.

National team assistant captain Lilian Aura opened the score for Strathmore through a penalty corner. The scorpions kept attacking the MKU Slixers defence without success.

Their efforts paid off in the 28th minute through Carol Njoki field goal.

Two minutes before the breather, Rachel Ousa converted a penalty corner making it three for the Scorpions.

Coming into the second half, the MKU defence was composed and managed to contain Strathmore.

However, the Kenya Univesrsisty Students Associations champions surged on with the attacks and on the 49th minute Gilly Okumu broke the Slixers defense sending the ball home past goalkeeper Jacinta Kasoa.

That broke the spirits of the Thika-based students allowing Scorpions to pin them in their own half.

That led to Damaris Namulanda 52nd minute field goal, with captain Lucy Wanjiku making it six two minutes later.

 Okumu was at it again in the 56th minute as she scored a fantastic field goal from a Linda Ayodi pass having disposed the MKU defence at the edge of the circle. Njoki ceased the opportunity to add to her goal tally scoring a brace in the 63rd minute through a penalty corner. 

Crucial matches are on card today as league leaders Police take on USIU in a must-win game that a victory will see them reclaim the title they lost last season.

Defending champions Nairobi Simba face Western Jaguars in their quest to finish in second place and secure a club championship berth.
