Over 10,000 residents of Faza Island in Lamu County have a cause to smile after the completion of a sea wall to prevent strong tidal waves threatening to wash away the village.

The 1.5 kilometre sea wall, constructed at a cost of Sh322 million by the Government through the Ministry of Public Works, was unveiled yesterday.

In the past, residents incurred huge loses in efforts to rehabilitate their houses damaged by strong sea waves.

Some houses were completely washed away by the advancing sea that experts attribute to the effects of global warming.

Speaking during the handing over ceremony in Faza, Public Works minister Chris Obure assured locals the Government was committed to safeguard its citizens’ property.

“There is no doubt that the destruction of property by sea waves during high tide had been a common phenomenon in the area, but this will now be a thing of the past,” he said.

The minister said construction work had taken three years.
