National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) has arrested 15 people in Kitale for flouting laws on noise pollution.

Led by Isaac Kimitei, Nema officials conducted raids at local pubs and entertainment joints.

Kimitei said many local pubs and entertainment joints do not observe provisions of the Environmental Management Co-ordination Act.

The officials, who were joined by police, conducted a door-to-door operation and caught bar operators and other businesses unawares.

Collection and disposal

"We have intensified a crackdown on those contravening the Nema laws and we warn noise polluters that their days are numbered," cautioned Kimitei. He said charge sheets had been prepared to arraign those arrested in court.

At the same time, Kimitei warned that action would be taken against Kitale Municipal Council if it does not adopt a proper waste disposal mechanism.

Residents of Kibomet Estate complained that individuals were dumping garbage along River Sabwani, posing a health hazard to users.

Residents praised Nema’s move. They called for more operations to clear the area of noise polluters.
