Kenya has secured two key positions in the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) leadership, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

It said a Kenyan delegation to Geneva, Switzerland, managed to win re-election to ITU Council in region D, for the period 2014-2018, and also secured re-election of Stanley Kibe to Radio Regulations Board (RRB).

Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i led the Kenya delegation and the intense campaigns that saw the two position secured.

“I am very happy we have done this, team Kenya has done a superb job. I would like to single out Communication Authority of Kenya Director General Francis Wangusi and his team for being well organised, innovative and for devising the winning strategy,” he said after the results were announced. Intense lobbying by head of the delegation, relationships between countries/continents and existing and potential trade ties played a key role in the elections.

During the election, Houlin Zhao of China was elected the new Secretary-General of ITU. He replaces Dr Hamadoun Toure of Mali whose term has come to an end.
